{"id":1400,"date":"2026-04-29T12:37:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T12:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/detikheadline.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/29\/south-korea-yoons-obstruction-sentence-hiked-to-7-years\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T12:37:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T12:37:02","slug":"south-korea-yoons-obstruction-sentence-hiked-to-7-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/detikheadline.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/29\/south-korea-yoons-obstruction-sentence-hiked-to-7-years\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea: Yoon&#8217;s Obstruction Sentence Hiked to 7 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>TEMPO.CO, Jakarta\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0A South Korean appeals court\u00a0hiked on Wednesday the sentence of former<span>\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.tempo.co\/tag\/south-korea\">South Korean<\/a>\u00a0President\u00a0Yoon Suk Yeol from five years to seven years, in\u00a0a justice obstruction case.<\/p>\n<p>In January, a lower court<span>\u00a0<\/span>sentenced Yoon to five years in prison<span>\u00a0<\/span>for abuse of power, having used presidential security agents to block his arrest, and for other charges.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate trial, Yoon was sentenced to life in prison for the crime of leading an insurrection over\u00a0abruptly imposing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempo.co\/read\/2101052\/en.tempo.co\/tag\/martial-law\">martial law<\/a>\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>What does Yoon&#8217;s\u00a0sentence say?<\/h2>\n<p>Yoon&#8217;s previous sentence for the crime of obstruction\u00a0was handed to him by a lower court that also cleared of some of the charges.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the appeals\u00a0court upheld the initial convictions, but also overturned some of the acquittals.\u00a0Yoon charges were linked to his short-lived 2024 martial law. Prosecutors had been seeking a 10-year jail\u00a0term.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In trying to stop authorities from executing an arrest warrant by use of force, Yoon committed \u200cacts that are unacceptable in a society of law and order,&#8221; the \u200cSeoul High Court judge said.<\/p>\n<p>The initial sentence handed to Yoon in January found him guilty of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not following due process before declaring martial law<\/li>\n<li>Fabricating official documentation related to the declaration<\/li>\n<li>Destroying potential criminal evidence by wiping official phone data<\/li>\n<li>Obstructing authorities from executing an arrest warrant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yoon may still appeal this sentence at the Supreme Court. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Yoon life sentence and other legal troubles\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Yoon was<span>\u00a0<\/span>handed\u00a0a life sentence<span>\u00a0<\/span>in February for the\u00a0crime of leading an insurrection, a result of his failed attempt to impose martial law in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In December of 2024, Yoon\u00a0made a shock late-night televised address, declaring\u00a0the suspension of civilian rule. Martial law lasted\u00a0about six hours that night as lawmakers rushed\u00a0to the assembly building and voted it down in an emergency session.<\/p>\n<p>He justified the move, saying his plan was to restore democratic order, claiming the country was being besieged by the opposition and &#8220;anti-state&#8221; forces.<\/p>\n<p>This came after his right-wing People Power Party lost its parliamentary majority earlier that year.<\/p>\n<p>Yoon&#8217;s wife,\u00a0former first lady Kim Keon Hee, was also given an<a href=\"https:\/\/en.tempo.co\/read\/2100844\/former-south-korean-first-lady-kim-handed-longer-graft-sentence\"> increased jail sentence<\/a> earlier this week, on unrelated corruption crimes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yoon faces eight trials related to his time\u00a0as president.
